My kid's bedroom is almost complete. Now, that I see how great the white walls look I really need to change out those closet doors. We picked out full light glass doors, in white laminate. Changing out the doors and handles makes a big impact. Save money in other areas of your remodel, don't forget the interior doors. Just waiting on the wallpaper order to arrive . . . wallpaper orders take at least 10 days to ship - decisions, decisions, decisions. You will soon not be able to face making another material, fixture decisions. No wonder why the interior decorator becomes your best friend!

One bedroom almost complete - at least one side done.

Things to think about if you are going to live in the house while it’s under construction:

I believe we are on week 4 of our home remodel. This process has been very helpful, I can relate to what are clients are experiencing. I know for them it’s more intense because they are relying on us and trusting us to get the job done. When you know exactly what you want, it helps because it does slow up the process if you are not making decisions quickly. Don’t deviate from the plan!

You will have a team of people knocking on your door at 7:00 am every morning. Make sure you ask about the weekend hours, most construction companies do not work on the weekend. It’s not a bad thing to have a weekend break but, the process is longer.

You will need to think about who is going to visit your home. I couldn’t imagine going through this process if I wasn’t comfortable with the crew. It’s different for us, because we are in the construction business so this hasn’t been a problem.

Your pets will not like this process. Think about your pets, our little dog needs lots of attention, walks, and love.

Additional storage – you might need to get a storage unit for a brief time, add this to your cost.

The cost for food is something I didn’t count on, all the meals out start to add up real fast.

Think about the weather you will have your doors and windows open all day due to the dust and traffic in the house.

Another good tip from one of our clients – get paper roll up shades for all the windows – you will need your privacy.

I’m starting this blog about our personal home remodel to document the process.

Most of our clients are apprehensive to start their remodel. They have all heard the nightmare stories from their friends about how long it will take, how much money you will really spend and how the contractor never shows up on time. Our commercial tenant improvement projects are different, it’s not personal, it’s business. When it comes to remodeling your home, that’s a different story – it’s personal!

It’s got to get messy before you see the pretty!

My husband came home from work and announced that he was going to take the wall down in the living room. Fantastic news! This is what a girl dreams about. . “When will this happen?” To my shock he said, “tomorrow morning at 7:00 am the guys will be starting so clean out the kitchen.

I have some photos of how we are living. My kid is now sleeping in the living room, our garage is jammed packed, my closet has cereal and canned foods on the floor. Noticed the guitar in the kitchen. Our wall took 3 days to come down. We were able to do this very quickly because of practice, we did a oral surgeons office that needed 21 load bearing beams. Our house was built in 1976 and the walls were textured - my dream was to have perfectly smooth walls. That's another process. I'm having my husband do a video to show our clients how this is done. The end result is fantastic! We have been getting lots of requests for smooth walls - it makes a big impact. It take about 4 days to complete the process. This photo shows a wall smoothed out and we did the ceiling too. Not, sure if you can get the full impact from the photo. I will do a video and post it shortly.
